Mathematics is a life skill which is becoming even more important in our rapidly changing technological world.

In Year 7 students are taught in mixed ability groups for a couple of weeks but then they are put into ability groups.

From this point onwards students are taught in ability groups.

Within these ability groups, work is still differentiated to cater for the different abilities.  This gives students the ability to fully develop their potential.  Groups are fluid and are constantly changing to ensure that we have children in the group that is most suited to them at any point in time.

Schemes of Learning are based on the National Curriculum and exam syllabus; however the maths team continues to enrich these with mathematics which lie outside of these.

Students are entered for GCSE maths at the end of Year 11.  Our more able students are offered the opportunity to study and gain another mathematics subject.

In order to engage and stimulate students a variety of lessons are delivered, including practical, investigative and consolidation lessons.  The maths team encourages students to reflect and correct their learning by setting time aside in lessons for them to do so.  Students are encouraged to work with each other during lesson, thus giving them the opportunity to discuss their mathematics, develop as independent learners and learn from each other.

The philosophy of the maths team is to teach for understanding, hence developing students’ ability to think logically; thus enabling them to apply their mathematical knowledge to solve problems set in theoretical and everyday situations.

To further engage students a mathematical puzzle is posted in the maths area.  This is changed regularly.

To support students in their mathematics studies the maths team runs lunchtime sessions every day, together with period 6 and morning sessions for targeted students.
